Transamerica invests in financial professionals because you are the backbone of our industry, and we believe you have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of your clients. And, truly understanding that can help shape the way we view life and our contribution while we’re here.
In the 10 years Transamerica has been bringing financial professionals together at our annual Coaching Forum, we’ve had a wonderfully wide range of keynote speakers. Our intent is to help financial professionals get better at serving their customers.
Authors, Olympians, coaches, TV personalities, physicians, and professors — we’ve had them all. But until this year, we’d never had someone who exemplified our Wealth + Health brand to this extent.
To be honest, we’d never had anyone like Sean Swarner.
For those who don’t know Sean’s remarkable story, here’s the CliffsNotes version:
After being diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma when he was 13, Sean proved doctors wrong by surviving beyond his three-month prognosis. At 16, he was given two weeks to live and administered his last rites after doctors found a tumor near his right lung.
Sean is now 43 and inspiring others every day.
In 2002, Sean became the first cancer survivor to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He later tackled the highest peaks on the other six continents, and completed the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii for good measure.
Did I mention he only has one functioning lung?
Explorers Grand Slam
Last year, Sean completed the Explorers Grand Slam by skiing to the North Pole. He had trekked to the South Pole two years earlier.
When asked what’s next, he displayed his sense of humor.
“I recently got engaged,” he said in an interview with our Marketing Department. “I’ve been told marriage might be a little more difficult than climbing Everest.”
Sean proposed to his fiancée, Julissa Perez, by satellite phone when he reached the North Pole. (“I know every woman dreams of being proposed to by a guy 3,000 miles away.”) They’re planning to get married in her native Puerto Rico on Feb. 9.
The final frontier
In addition to wedding plans, Sean is mapping out his next adventure to raise money for cancer survivors and their families.
“I want to be the first cancer survivor in space,” he said.
Thinking big, as always, Sean envisions raising millions of dollars for charity. Just as he did for his North Pole trek, Sean would carry a flag covered with names of people whose lives have been affected by cancer. Each name would require a small donation.
“I would love to make a campaign out of it and maybe ask for $20 a name and get a million names on there,” he explained. “That’s $20 million we could give back to cancer research and other cancer charities.”
The Wealth + Health connection
As most people know, the cost of cancer can be considerable. It’s an example of how our health can directly impact our wealth. To help financial professionals provide education and guidance to clients with cancer, we created a guide that’s available to download.
The 2018 Coaching Forum gave Sean a firsthand look at how Transamerica is taking a leading role in recognizing the Wealth + Health connection.
“It was fantastic,” Sean said. “It doesn’t make sense to me that other companies aren’t realizing that if they have healthy employees, they’re going to have a much better work environment and lower healthcare costs. For me it’s common sense. I think the older I get, the more I realize that common sense is an oxymoron.”
Sean also provides educational resources for cancer survivors. He recently launched thenext7days.com, a program to provide guidance, support, and motivation for people who are adjusting to life after cancer treatment.
“Some people come out on the other side with a fantastic attitude,” Sean said. “You could have others who went through the exact same thing, but come out of the other side a grumpy curmudgeon and still question, ‘Why me?’
“I don’t know why people would want to go through something like this and not have it change their lives for the better. We’re here for less than the blink of an eye. Why wouldn’t you want to suck as much marrow out of life as possible?”
At Transamerica, we are committed to helping our financial professionals better serve their customers. We know investing in them is a small price toward creating a better life for others. We are leading the industry toward the intersection of Wealth + Health. Join us for the journey.
